We were delighted to receive an email from Sue, who had discovered two silver napkin rings. They were presented in a square cardboard box, emblazoned with “With the Compliments of the Worshipful Master and Brethren Petts Wood Lodge (No. 5435) on the 30th October 1937.”

Traditionally, Ladies’ Festivals were cherished events held towards the end of the Worshipful Master’s year, typically a week or two before our November meeting. We’re therefore certain these elegant pieces would have been a thoughtful gift at that very festival.

The two silver napkin rings are beautifully Hallmarked and feature a blank area, traditionally left for engraving a name, monogram, or initials. They were made and retailed by The Glossoid Co. Ltd of 19-21, Thavies Inn, Holborn Circus, London EC1βan area I know well from my own time working locally in Holborn.

Sue recently travelled down to Kent, and we took the opportunity to meet. It was a truly special moment as she presented The Lodge with these wonderful reminders of our history. Our Lodge, founded in 1934, was then only three years old. We’re not entirely sure how these items came into Sue’s possession, as there’s no obvious direct connection to the Lodge. However, interestingly, many of our Lodge members, like Sue’s father and indeed her entire family, were deeply involved in the Scouting movement.
Sue’s father was also a Freemason, and we spent a fascinating time poring over the memorabilia she had brought with her. We were able to add context and history to some of her photographs and certificates, and I’ve promised to help identify some of the jewels from his regalia box in the future.
We are immensely grateful to Sue for taking the time and effort to research our Lodge, find our website, and get in touch. It was a truly lovely experience to finally meet and exchange not just the napkin rings, but also to hear captivating tales of her family’s rich involvement in both Freemasonry and the Scouting movement. The Lodge now proudly adds these unique items to our small but growing collection of Founder’s and Past Master Jewels.
